Recipe adapted from my friend Whitney. (via-text)

Ingredients for the cake-

  • 1 c. unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 4 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 2 c. unbleached all purpose flour
  • 2 c. granulated white sugar
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 c. sour cream (plain Greek yogurt could be a substitute)

Frosting ingredients-

  • 1/2 c. unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 4 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 6 tbsp. milk
  • 1 pound box powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil with some hanging on the ends. Grease/spray the aluminum foil.
  2. CAKE DIRECTIONS- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. On the stove top- boil 1 cup water, butter, and cocoa powder. (Make sure to not let it boil too long otherwise it will burn.)
  4. Pour the hot ingredients in the large bowl of flour, sugar, and salt and mix well.
  5. Add the beaten eggs, sour cream, and vanilla and stir.
  6. Pour the cake batter on the lined cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
  7. FROSTING DIRECTIONS- *You’ll be pouring this right when the cake comes out of the oven.* Boil the butter, cocoa powder, and milk.
  8. Once the butter, cocoa powder, and milk start to boil, add the box of powdered sugar and vanilla. Mix well. Take off the heat.
  9. Bring out the cake once all baked and immediately pour the hot frosting on top of it. Use your spatula to spread it all over the cake.
  10. Let the cake cool completely before cutting into it.
